Our National Lottery Community Fund application was unsuccessful — they felt we needed more time to establish ourselves and greater team diversity. The land we had identified was sold. But we're not deterred. We're searching for new sites and exploring alternative funding routes. The need for accessible nature spaces in Cornwall hasn't changed. Neither has our determination to create them.

Our Story

Born From Personal Experience

"My youngest son has cerebral palsy and cannot walk. My eldest has autism. Every week I see how little there is for children like mine to do outdoors in rural Cornwall."

My name is Simon Ward and I founded Cornwall Accessible Nature Parks CIC because of my two boys — and because of every family like ours who deserves better than making do.

There are farms, petting zoos and beautiful countryside all around us in North Cornwall — but so little of it is genuinely accessible to a child in a wheelchair, or to a child who needs a calm, safe, sensory environment. We are building rural Cornwall's most accessible community nature park — completely free, open every day, designed for everyone.

The Vision

What We Are Building

A fully accessible, free community nature park — and the beginning of a movement to bring accessible outdoor spaces to families right across Cornwall.

Accessible Play Areas

Safe, secure play areas with specially adapted equipment designed for disabled children. Proper hard pathways for wheelchairs and mobility aids throughout the entire site.

Sensory Petting Barn

A calm, safe, inclusive petting barn where children can hold guinea pigs, rabbits and other small animals at their own pace — particularly designed for autistic children and those with sensory needs.

Woodland Trail

A beautiful accessible trail through established woodland featuring many tree species, each with its own interpretation plaque helping visitors discover and connect with nature.

Picnic Area & Café

Accessible picnic tables set in open grassland. Traditional Cornish cream teas, coffees and light refreshments. Somewhere grandparents can sit and watch their grandchildren play.

Working Smallholding

A working farm growing fruit, vegetables, honey and eggs — all sold on site. Schools, Scouts and Cubs welcome for outdoor education days, learning where food comes from.

Accessible Glamping

Glamping pods offering affordable, accessible family breaks — helping fund the park's long-term sustainability so it can remain free and open for the community, forever.

The Search Continues

Finding Our Perfect Site

We had identified a beautiful site in North Cornwall — established woodland with many specimen trees and open grassland. It was perfect. But the landowner moved quickly, and it was sold before we could secure funding. That's the reality of land in Cornwall right now: opportunity moves fast, and funding takes time.

We're Not Stopping Here

We're actively searching for new sites across North and Central Cornwall. We're looking for properties with woodland, grassland, and the potential for buildings. We're talking to landowners, agents, and communities. We're also exploring alternative funding routes beyond grant bodies — partnerships, social enterprises, and other creative approaches that respect our mission to keep the park free forever.

Everything we earn goes back to the community. We are a non-profit community interest company. After covering operational expenses and maintaining the park, all remaining profits are reinvested directly — either into expanding and improving our own facilities, or into supporting other accessible community projects across Cornwall. We don't exist to make shareholders wealthy. We exist to make a difference. Every pound earned is a pound spent on our mission: creating accessible nature spaces for disabled families, the elderly, and communities who deserve to experience rural Cornwall.

Cornwall Accessible Activities Programme — Cornwall's charity for disabled children's activities — has confirmed they will promote the park and bring families to visit once open.

🌍 Sense

The national charity supporting children and adults with complex disabilities, including those who are deafblind. Sense has endorsed the project and recognises the profound impact accessible nature experiences have on physical health, mental wellbeing, and sensory development.

🏥 Pendruccombe House

A local residential and nursing home committed to enhancing wellbeing and community connection for their residents. They've expressed enthusiastic support for the project.
